The World Food and Music Festival

Marnae blog, Our Adventures, Uncategorized

We have a lot of projects going on in our house – as usual. During covid, we took a step way back, stayed home, spent time as a family, did our jobs, and reassessed. Since we have eased back into doing things, but not full force. We still find ourselves pretty busy with all of the kids’ activities and juggling their schedules with friends, the projects we are trying to do around the house, regular daily chores that need done, jobs, school, and our insistence on balancing all of that with spending time together as a family.

This last weekend, we made sure we infused some entertainment into our family time. We all love the Des Moines World Food and Music Festival and were able to fit it in for a while on Sunday.

We walked the grounds and checked out the food and cultural booths. It circles two blocks of the downtown area near the sculpture park and includes vendors with tents and food trucks that cook up something from countries around the world. An app categorizing the food by nation, with maps, descriptions and parking tips helped us get around. We each chose something from different spots. Ben had a burrito. Sam had quesa tacos and then went back for dirty rice from another booth. Jeff had jerk chicken and dirty rice. I had spring rolls and sticky rice. The boys also had cupcakes. There were crepes we thought about trying, but the line was really too long. It was fun to watch them being made, however. Each booth had several food items for sale with a $1 sample item available. I may just do sample items next year, it was really difficult to decide what to eat. I think we walked the circle three times before I made a decision. Everything looked and smelled so good. This allowed me to pick out a necklace I wanted from a vendor though too so – win-win?

Everyone left full, happy, and loving the sounds of b.well on the way out. Discovering another local musician to learn about (and like even more after finding out about who he is). This festival is always a great time.
